A Lake District Horse Portrait Session
This article explores what happens on an equine photoshoot in the Lake District with photographer Emma Campbell.

You can’t get more scenic than Cumbria!
Add a dash of the brilliant pair, Connie and her beautiful Connemara horse Flip and you have a fantastic combination for a Lake District horse photoshoot session.
It was a great spring afternoon, in collaboration with the fabulous Yorkshire photographer Lisa Kershaw.
Our horses are more than just animals in our lives.
They are part of our story.
The weather forecast had shown strong winds and a chance of heavy showers. But the Cumbrian weather can be unpredictable at times, so having looked at the satellite we decided to go ahead. And who’d of guessed the sun would be our biggest problem!
Too much harsh light and it throws so much contrast on your client’s face and a grey horse can look very white. In situations like this, I’d often stand my clients often facing with their backs to the sun.
Cumbrian Equine Photoshoot
The location was on a quiet road on common land, just outside Caldbeck, a lovely northern lakeland village. Despite the wind howling at times, Flip the Connemara was an absolute star.
He was so relaxed and the perfect model; even dipping into the gorse bushes, he was so chilled. Connie did a number of dress changes and each time we positioned her and Flip in a slightly different location, such as the long grass, gorse or road.
All depending on what the sun was doing and how bright it was.

Light is everything
Light is everything in a photograph. You have to get that right first and then everything else will follow. Everything just worked a dream and I’m so pleased how the photographs turned out. Debbie, Connie’s mum has already purchased an Aluminum print from the photoshoot session and you can easily see why. They pair, placed in such amazing landscape, just looked incredible.
Thank you Connie, Flip, Debbie and Lisa for such a great afternoon.
