Your Horse Photoshoot
This article explores how Master Craftsman equine photographer Emma Campbell creates natural, timeless portraits that capture the unique connection between horses and their owners.

When chatting with potential clients, I often hear them comment that they’re searching for a horse photographer who can not only provide them with incredible photographs, but also those that are not staged and are natural.
They want to capture the unique connection they have with their horse, a relationship that can often take years to build through trust.
As a Master Craftsman Equine Portrait Photographer, my work focuses on creating natural, authentic images of horses and their owners in environments that feel real and meaningful.
Here’s how I approach every horse photoshoot.
It Starts with Listening

Before a client books their horse photoshoot, I ask one simple question:
“Why is now the right time?”
There is always a reason.
It might be:
- A milestone birthday
- A retirement season
- A young rider gaining confidence
- Or simply the awareness that time moves quickly
Understanding this story shapes the entire session. It influences the choice of location, the tone, the pacing and the final artwork.
Natural equine photography isn’t about directing people into stiff poses. It begins with understanding what matters most.

Celebrate their unique
connection and bond.
PRICELESS
Choosing a Location That Feels Like Home
I don’t like to transport horses to unfamiliar, dramatic settings just for impact.
Instead, I ask:
Where is your happy place together? Where so you both like to hang out?
For some, it’s the quiet corner of the yard.
Others, a favourite hacking route or their horse’s field.
Photographing horses in environments they know keeps them relaxed. And relaxed horses show their true personality – soft expressions, natural posture, gentle interaction.
I use my expertise as a master craftsman photographer to choose your landscape and make it complement the image.
Bespoke Wall Art
Providing a daily reminder in their home just how amazing they are!
Keeping Posing Simple (and Honest)
Many horse photography workshops focus on complicated posing. That has never been my approach.
I use just two or three gentle prompts – such as:
- Walk away and back together and simply talk to them
When the owner relaxes, the horse relaxes.
And that’s when the real moments happen.
Natural equine portrait photography is about space, patience and observation – not choreography.
Working With Your Horse’s Personality
Every horse is different.
Some are curious.
While some sensitive.
Others are characterful and expressive.
With over 30 years of equestrian experience – and a background in Equine Science – I read body language carefully throughout the session. This allows me to adapt in the moment, keeping everything calm, safe and enjoyable.
I never rush.
The aim is always to capture your horse as they truly are.
Keeping equipment simple and unobtrusive
I work primarily with natural light and minimal equipment.
No flashing lights.
No reflectors being waved around
Nothing that distracts or unsettles the horse.
Simplicity keeps the focus where it belongs – on your connection.
Beyond a Pretty Picture
As a Panel Member, Judge and Mentor with The Guild of Photographers, and a previous winner of Equine Image of the Year and Overall Image of the Year (Judges’ Choice), I care deeply about craftsmanship.
But technical excellence is only part of the story.
The most powerful horse and owner portraits aren’t the most dramatic.
They’re the most honest. They are you and your horse and they should like a wonderful emotion and feeling each time you see them.
They’ll highlight –
- Years of partnership
- Quiet affection
- Trust built over time
And when those images are turned into bespoke wall art, they become part of your home – daily reminders of a relationship, challenges and celebrations that has shaped your life with them.
