Sonic has been in Emma’s and her family’s life for 20 years. From the moment she first met him, she felt a connection – after a short, windswept ride, he cuddled into her in the barn as if he already knew he’d found his home.

Growing up together, Emma and Sonic shared countless memories, from Pony Club rallies to one-day events. A particular highlight was winning Champion Handy Hunter Pony at Penrith Show, where Sonic flew around the obstacles with his usual speed and confidence.

As her childhood pony, Sonic taught Emma far more than just riding. He showed her how to sit quietly, stay balanced, and trust a horse who knew his job inside out. He gave her confidence, resilience and a love of riding that has lasted a lifetime.

Even after he injured a tendon in his teens and their competitive days began to wind down, Sonic remained a much-loved family member. “We’re a family where, once a horse comes, they rarely leave,” Emma says. And the idea of not seeing him waiting at the gate was something she simply couldn’t imagine.


Now aged 28, Sonic is still very much part of daily life, and having a portrait of him on the wall is Emma’s way of honouring everything he’s given her.

“He’s a piece of the family,” she says. “He won’t be around forever, but having him up on the wall makes me feel happy and grateful. It’s something that lasts, and something we’ll always have to remember him by.”
