Let’s ignore that Muddy Field! Where to Hold Your Horse Photoshoot This Season

Your Spring Horse Photoshoot
As winter transitions to spring, many horse owners hesitate to book a horse photoshoot, worried about muddy fields and less-than-picture-perfect surroundings. But here’s the secret: you don’t need a pristine field for stunning equine photography. In fact, some of the best locations for a horse photoshoot have nothing to do with fields at all!
1. Quiet Lanes and Country Roads
If your horse is comfortable with it, a quiet lane near your yard can be the perfect setting for your photoshoot. Just last week, I photographed a beautiful session along a peaceful road next to a client’s field. The natural hedgerows, beautiful old trees and soft light created a stunning, timeless backdrop – and not a single muddy hoofprint was in sight!
2. Indoor Arenas and Barn Interiors
For those who have access to an indoor school, this can be a fantastic location. The controlled environment allows us to create dramatic, moody images by darkening the background, letting your horse take centre stage. This style of photography is ideal for creating striking portraits that highlight your horse’s personality and presence.
3. Stable Blocks and Livery Yards
Stable blocks, barn doors, or even the side of a livery building can provide excellent backdrops. The textures of brick, wood, and stone can add depth to the images, while absorbing the history and character of where you keep your horse. Whether it’s a headshot framed in a stable doorway or a full-body portrait against an old brick wall, these settings can bring a classic and stunning look to your horse photoshoot.
4. Woodland and Nearby Natural Spaces
If your yard has a small wooded area or even a few trees, these too can create a beautiful and natural backdrop. With the blossom starting to show on some trees, the softness and delicate colour, can make an image look amazing. While the soft light filtering through branches can add a magical feel, with the trees themselves, creating a clean and elegant setting.
5. Driveways and Gravel Paths
A simple gravel driveway or country path can also be an elegant alternative to a muddy field. These locations are brilliant, as they offer neutral tones, so don’t distract from the real focus – you and your horse!
