Equine Photography feature

Great to have been asked to help with a new feature in Lancashire Life Magazine this month.

Feature Editor Laura Wells contacted me and asked would I like to help with an article on unusual careers! Of course I jumped at the chance. Although I had worked as a freelancer for Horse and Hound Magazine in the 90’s, my photography took a small back seat, as a full time career in the digital industry followed.

Although my photography was always there. Whether it was used in my digital work, or in my spare time – the dabbling resulted in me working for organisations such as SweetSpot, gaining my Sports Journalism Association membership and exhibiting in the Design Museum in London. But I was still wary to go full time as a horse photographer.

The article is lovely and examines how I did make the break and explores and the best and worst of my present role. It has also got me very much reflecting on my learning journey.

LEAP OF FAITH

Before I went full time, I wanted to make sure that I was in a good position to give it my best shot. I had joined the Guild of Photographers in 2016 and learnt my craft from some incredible mentees, such as Kevin Pengally and gained inspiration from commerical Tim Wallace. I opened my eyes and ears to information, feedback and criticism. This resulted in winning the Guild of Photographers Equine Category, being Runners-up and a finalist 4 times. I won the Image of the Year Award in 2000 and I was getting placed in International Competitions. Together with gaining my Master Craftsman and business qualification, in 2022 I felt I was now in the right place to follow my dream and help others.

ITS A LEARNING JOURNEY

It has taken many years to get to where I am today and at times it was been really hard. But whether you are applying yourself to your craft or your business, for me, it’s always been about effort, resilience, being open minded, learn from the best and focus 100% on your client.
