RPS – Digit Magazine, How to Photograph Horses

The Royal Photographic Society – Equine Photography feature – how to photograph horses.
Super happy to be one of the contributors to the latest edition of the RPS’s Digit Magazine.
Last autumn, I was contacted by the Royal Photographic Society to see if I would write an article about how to get the best images, when photographing horses.
The Spanish Riding School
The timing of this article coincided with the first-ever visit of the Spanish Riding School performing in Scotland.
Capturing the best classically trained horses in the world, was too much of an opportunity to miss! So, I drove north from Cumbria to Aberdeen, excited to see these beautiful stallions for the very first time.
The Lipizzaner stallions have undergone years of kind training, built on trust and gentle communication. They are the perfect example of what a well-balanced, athletic horse can be and perfect for demonstrating, the good practice of photographing horses.
The article explores creating a successful portrait session, photographing correctly the horse’s paces, and the equipment I use – keeping it simple! Tips for photographing horses, whether indoors or out, as well as gaining access to horses, if you don’t own your own or have a friend that does.
