As photographers, we work hard to analyse the technical elements of an image – focusing on exposure, sharpness, composition, and editing choices. We train ourselves to spot distractions in the background or missed opportunities for symmetry. That attention to detail is a skill, and it matters – especially when we’re working professionally or preparing work for qualifications or competitions.

But what I also find fascinating is the emotional core of a photograph – the story or connection it conveys, and how this resonates differently with each person who views.

When mentoring, I often talk about the difference between a client’s image and one that’s suitable for competition. A photograph can have many purposes, wear many hats – and I’m intrigued by how it can be interpreted in different ways depending on the viewer’s background, technical knowledge, and emotional connection to the subject.
